A court in Paris has sentenced a Frenchman to 30 years in prison for crimes committed in Syria in 2013-2015, as the same has been a member of the militant group, the Islamic State (IS) (ISIS).
Tyler Vilus, 30-year-old converted to Islamic Islam, was found guilty of associating with the militant group Islamic State (IS) and on murder charges.
Investigators believe Vilus was part of Al-Muhajireen, a group of foreign fighters, mainly North Caucasus and Central Asian countries, responsible for the torture and executions committed in Syria. In 2015, this group had left the IS and joined the Al-Nusra Front, a group linked to Al-Qaeda.
Prosecutors have accused Willus of monitoring the executions, while being one of the IS's key figures.
In a propaganda video published by the IS in 2015, Vilus is seen standing about two metres away from some inmates who were then executed.
Vilus claims that we had been passing through that area when this video was shot. But prosecutors believe that Vilus é, who was arrested in 2015 in Turkey, as he headed to Prague, he wanted to return to France to conduct terrorist attacks.
Vilus has admitted having contact with Abdelhamid Abaaoud, who is suspected to be the mastermind of the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015, where 130 people were killed.
Prosecutors had sought the death penalty for Vilus, but the judge said he would grant an easier sentence, so that he can have hope that “can be improved”.
