As COVID-19 continues to affect the world, traditional embassy reception has been replaced to be virtually marked because of personal safety measures and to keep social distance.

American Ambassador Philip S. Costett on the Independence Day case has said the people of the United States and the people of Kosovo share many values and attributes.

American Ambassador Philip S. Costett on Independence Day

Hello. Thank you for joining us to celebrate the 244th anniversary of the Day of Independence of the United States.

In 1776 the United States was on a journey to independence. Our founders did more than seek freedom from a foreign king. They tried to build a new kind of society a republic that recognized that life, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness were clear human rights.

More than two centuries on America's journey to realize that the vision is incomplete. Americans have experienced times of joy and progress, but also of pain and regregation. In the 1860 ' s, hundreds of thousands of Americans, white and black, died in a tragic civil war to bring freedom to millions of other enslaved Americans.

A century later civil rights activists, such as Martin Luther King Jr., gave their lives in the struggle to create a society in which, according to King's words, children would one day live in a nation where they [would not] be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

And fighting for equal justice and equal opportunities in America wasn't just a race issue. The leaders, like Susan B. Anthony, 19th century champion to vote for women's rights, fought for the proposal that America's claim that all men are created equal should be applied to women. American generations of celebrities, some anonymous ones have struggled to extend the concept of equality to include people of all races, all ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual identities.

In recent weeks we have seen America's long journey continue, as Americans are fighting racism and injustice again.

In America, like any country, democracy is no sport for spectators. Democracy requires the citizens' active commitment and persistence. It also requires honesty and persistence to address our weaknesses and to learn from our failures. This is a time of turmoil and anxiety in America but also a time of hope. I hope that an irreversible, positive change can happen with an engaged population. The same can be said of Kosovo.

The people of the United States and the people of Kosovo share many values and attributes. Our peoples are strong and smart, creative and kind, resourceful and flexible. As friends and partners, we responded when we needed each other. We stayed together to make Kosovo independent, following the 11 September attacks in the fight against global terrorism.

And now we stand together in front of a global pandemic.

Recent challenges have shown the creativity and resilience of the people of Kosovo. While institutions and businesses were forced to close to prevent the spread of the virus, the government, businesses and civil society reacted equally to helping those in need. The United States responded with financial and technical help. There is much more to do, even from ordinary citizens, to bring pandemic under control. But I am confident that with persistence, hard work and cooperation across borders, we will triumph over the virus, as we have triumphed over other enemies.

On this Day of America's Independence, let's once again pledge our best efforts to build society to build a common future reflecting the dreams of our founders and fulfill our obligations to future generations.

Dr. Raka on US Independence Day note

Honored Ambassador, honored citizens of Kosovo and the United States, I have the honor and privilege that, on behalf of the citizens of Kosovo, I wish the United States on Independence Day!

The people of Kosovo will always be grateful to the United States for their role in cultivating ideals stemming from the July 4th Declaration of Independence of July 1776. The experience of the United States provides an excellent guide for the dreams, freedoms, democracy and prosperity of all Kosovo citizens.

Freedom is also a story of resistance. And while Kosovo people have moved from their resistance to tyranny to independence and freedom, we continue to seek justice and work, health, education and science, art and culture.

During this year, the world shut down COVID-19 pandemic with a deadly virus threatening mankind. Our people have also faced this difficult challenge with limited resources. But friends are together on a difficult day. The same thing happened this time when our American friends helped our people by supporting Kosovo's healthcare system. We thank you for this essential support.

Since there is not yet any medicine or vaccine, preventing this disease remains the only weapon available to us. Dear citizens, please follow the preemptive advice by keeping your physical distance everywhere and at any time, wearing masks, and maintaining hand hygiene. Only together can we face this challenge!

Our path to the future is common, and we are committed to fulfilling the ideals that emerge from the July 4th Declaration. Let's follow President John F's quote. Kennedy, “don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country! ”

Today, July 4th, every Kosovar is American!

America, today on your flag you have one more star of Kosovo!

Happy Independence Day.

God bless the United States and Kosovo!
