The man arrested is a refugee from Rwanda who had worked as a volunteer at the cathedral and was assigned to close the facility Friday evening, a French television reported, citing prosecutor Pierre Sennes.
He said on Saturday that three fires had spread to the scene and that there were no signs of forced entry into the facility. However, authorities have begun investigations into intentional arson.
The fire started Saturday morning. Firefighters had managed to bring him under control in a few hours and completely turned it off in the afternoon.
This event took place over a year after the great fire that had engulfed the Paris Nore Dame cathedral, which has been greatly damaged by flames.
