Beijing said today that it has restored quarantine restrictions for some 21 million people amid fears of the second wave of coronary and spreading to other regions.
Early in the week the Chinese capital was forced to close schools, bars, restaurants and some residential complexes after increasing the number of infections.
The new cases were traced to the largest majority market in the town of Xinfadi, which also closed, although around 80 per cent of the capital's meat and vegetables came from it.
The figure of new cases in Beijing stands at 158. The head of the Beijing Disease Prevention Centre, Pang Xinghuo, said: “The spread is on the rise. Taking into consideration the majority market as an epidex, it can still grow. ”
Meanwhile, Chinese officials face the huge task of tracking people who have visited the Xinfadi market.
Yesterday an AP network reporter reported that he had been taking pictures near the market in Xinfadi without going inside. But he had later received a phone call from local authorities, who told him he had to go to a nearby stadium that serves as a testing center.
The journalist said the caller did not know his name, but computer systems had made the connection between his telephone number and his location near the market.
