The South Transitional Council (STC) declared self-government in the country's south in April, complicating UN efforts to achieve permanent ceasefire in a war that separatists and government forces have waged as nominal allies in the Saudi coalition against the rebels Houthi controlling the country's north.
On Saturday, the STC announced that it had taken control of military bases and government buildings on the main island of Socotras, an archipela with few populations, writes The Guardian, translates Periscopi.
The government, led by President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, condemned the action as “puc” and accused STC forces of attacking government buildings with gang conduct.
Socotras Governor Ramzi Mahroo accused coalition leaders, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates of turning their backs on him.
The Saudi coalition spokesman and the ministry of foreign affairs of the United Arab Emirates did not respond to journalists' questions.
