US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet in Hawaii with China's top diplomat Yang Yechi, in an effort to ease tensions between the world's two largest economies on various issues, according to media reports.
US Secretary Pompeo's preparations for the meeting were made “in silence” and details have not yet been finalised, state “Politico”.
Mr. Pompeo has been very vocal in criticising China on a number of issues, from the origin of the Coronavirus to the Chinese policies for Hong Kong and treatment from Beijing of ethnic and religious minorities.
Hong Kong newspaper, “South China Morning Post” cites an unidentified source, under which Minister Yang, who is also a state adviser and member of the Communist Party Political Bureau, will represent the Chinese side at the meeting.
In recent months, ties between the two countries have deteriorated, and US President Donald Trump has said he could even cut relations altogether.
Secretary Pompeii said last month that China could have prevented the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the world if it had been more transparent for the choreographer and accused Beijing of refusing to exchange information.
He also said China's plans to impose national security laws in Hong Kong would be “the death disasterx1> for the autonomy of this former British colonel.
