Coronavirus remains a serious threat in the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the lead expert on infectious diseases.

In an interview with the Russian-language Voice Service Lesia Bacalts, the director of the National Infectious Diseases Institute warned that now that states are removing physical distance measures, individuals must be very careful with protective measures to avoid infection. In line with Dr. Faucit, the interview was conducted through Skype to respect social distance.

While the number of Coronavirus infected has reached nearly 2 million people, American states are gradually removing social distance measures in hopes that the crisis has entered a manageable phase. Dr. Fauci says that the coronobius remains a threat to public health and that in this period of reopening in most parts of the country, advice from experts on infection should be respected:

For someone living in an area where infections are not very widespread, it is more acceptable to return gradually to normal. But in an area where there is active infection, it would not be advisable to remove social distance measures immediately. There is no single formula. The decision should be dictated by the situation in the area where the individual” lives.

That advice also applies to schools, says Dr. Fauci: There will be areas where reopening can be done safely, without bringing an increase of infection, while in other areas there can be practiced reduced, shifts-hour instruction so that children are not together in large groups.

The recent protests sparked by African death, George Floyd, have raised concern over the increase in coronary cases. Dr. Fauci reiterated warnings about the risk of exposure to the virus:

I have long said that gatherings and crowds are associated with danger. We were very upset to learn that there were infected in the ranks of the National Guard (in the contingent sent in response to the protests). That means there is the possibility that others have infected, or infected by others”.

Dr. Fauci explains that in the atmosphere of protests associated with a large concentration of people in a narrow area, with shouting and cheering, germs spread more easily. He advises those who feel the need to exercise their constitutional rights to wear masks as a safeguard clause:

“Scans may have no 100% protection capacity, but undoubtedly offer a safeguard clause from infection. If someone is infected, the mask protects others from infection. A simple baby mask is enough. There's no need to wear a special N-95-type mask; These masks are needed by health workers, as they face constant risks in contact with patients”.

Dr. Fauci adheres to warnings of a rise in cases during the fall, but adds that this can be prevented by respecting expert recommendations:

If we do this effectively, we can prevent a second wave. It's not inevitable that there will be a second wave, we can prevent it from doing it right”.

Rivalry in much of the country has made it difficult to identify the source of infection and tracking people who may have been infected. This is because much of the infection comes from people without symptoms. Rivalry makes it even harder to identify these people.

In recent days, a World Health Organization expert created confusion when he said that patients without symptoms rarely become the source of infection. The data doesn't support her statement, says Dr. Faucie:

Fifty percent of infected persons do not show symptoms. We know that people without symptoms can infect others. We don't know what percentage of infection is caused by people without symptoms, but we do know it's not a rare <x1.

As testing rates increase, the effort for a vaccine continues in a number of countries. The Trump administration announced at the beginning of the month that it has narrowed the list to five candidates, which it is supporting with funds. Dr. Fauci is optimistic that research is moving in the right direction.

I am optimistic because in early human and animal trials, positive results were seen. So tested vaccines offered protection in the experimental phase of animals and in the first phase of human trials. A defensive reaction from the vaccine was observed. But we can't guarantee yet whether the vaccine does not cause side damage, or effective protection”.

Dr. Fauci predicts identifying a vaccine at a record time, thanks to funds the federal government has dedicated to producing doses of certain vaccine variants, although a successful vaccine has not yet been identified.

The federal government has been willing to take over financial risks in order to accelerate the process of developing a vaccine, cutting the process for several months. If the vaccine doesn't work, the funds are wasted. But I think it's worth the risk, because if the vaccine succeeds, the process will have taken place a lot of”.

The risk is only for funds spent on an inefficient vaccine, not in processes that affect the quality of the vaccine, the expert adds:

We'll definitely ensure that the vaccine is scientifically secure”.

Dr. Fauci refuses to speak specifically for a timeline when the vaccine will be available to the wider population. He adds that the coronary will continue to be a threat to public health for the near future and that fear of infectious diseases can continue for years. But the world will return to normal, the expert can confidently express itself.

Maybe a distant day we'll sit together for a studio interview,” says Dr. Anthony Faucie. / VOA
