Interior Ministry spokesman in Afghanistan Tariq Arian said the bomb targeted Akber Khan mosque at the time when believers gathered for evening prayer. Arian said the mosque imam, Muhamed Ayaz Niazi, is one of two people killed in the attack. The Taliban condemned the murder of imam.
At least two other people were injured in the attack. Foreign embassies and government buildings are located in the Vazir Akbar Khan neighbourhood in Kabul.
The attack comes a day after at least seven civilians were killed by an explosion on the side of the road north of Afghanistan.
