Tirana turns out to be the town with the lowest air pollution in the region, compared to other capitals such as Skopje, Podgorica, Sarajevo or Belgrade”. In a recently published report on the impact of Covid-19 on air pollution in the Western Balkans, the World Bank stresses that car pollution is even the most disturbing in the Albanian capital.
“Tirana results in being the lowest air pollution city in the region, compared to other capitals such as Skopje, Podgorica, Sarajevo or Belgrade, while Pristina is not taken into analysis. Air pollution in the concrete case is measured by the level of PM2.5 particles, primarily the product of factories, pollution from cars, or wood burning. Among the Albanian cities, Korca figures are the most polluted, even on the allowed European Union limit of PM2.5 particles. This is argued that relatively cold temperatures during winter months promote the use of coal and wood for heating, causing significantly higher pollution”, the study says.
