American Astronaut White came out of the probe “Gemini” at a height of 216km on Earth. Linked to the space shuttle with a seven - meter tube that provided oxygen and communication, White used a special hand tool to maneuver into space.
Although leaving the ship was scheduled for 12 minutes, White, satisfied with this experience, lasted the walk in space for up to 20 minutes, which forced the travel director to Houston to order him back on board.
Walking in space in 1965 showed that people could work in a hostile environment outside their space ship.
No more than two years after this historic event, astronaut Edward White died of fire while preparing for another mission in space.
