Albania: Rapes rose to 40 %s in last year

Criminal proceedings for rape of adults and minors, child abuse, gun - threatening sex, shameful acts, and sexual harassment have increased by about 40 %s during 2019, compared with 2018.

While the number of files the prosecution referred to in court for sexual crimes during 2019 has increased 85.71 compared to 2019. Meanwhile, the number of sexual crimes indictees has doubled. The data was alarmingly reflected in the Attorney General's document on criminality during 2019, where there is an outbreak of sexual crimes.

Official data confirms that the heavy event of a school guard in Tirana, arrested for systematic rape of a 15-year-old, is not an isolated case.

More specifically, 29 proceedings were recorded during 2018 for criminal acts of sexual relations with minors, as well as for sex with violence for minors aged 14-18. They have referred to 8 files in court, while 6 were convicted of these serious acts.

Meanwhile, during 2019, 42 criminal proceedings for these acts were recorded, 33 files were submitted to court, while 11 people were convicted as rapists and abusers. In total, for sexual crimes, 158 criminal proceedings were recorded during 2019, while 49 people were convicted in court. In 2018, the prosecution sent 44 convicted defendants to court, while in 2019 he sent 89 defendants.

In terms of gender and age for sex crimes indictees, statistical data finds that 99,10 % of the defendants (over 18) are males and 0.90 %s are female.

Meanwhile, from the overall number of male defendants, 13,64 % are minor (14-18 years). In this group of works, during 2019, 1 foreign nationals has been charged. As for the education of the defendants, 66,36 % of the defendants are with education of up to 9 years, 26,36 % with middle education and 7,28 % with higher education. As to the social situation from statistical data, it is noted that 72,41 % of the defendants for sexual crimes are unemployed, 22,41 % of the defendants are from the private sector and 5,17 % employed in the state sector.

Also, according to the Attorney General's document, it turns out that 63,06 %s of the sexual crimes indictees reside in the city. So the trend is such that there is a greater presence of this phenomenon in the city.

In terms of the defendant's judicial situation, 93,64 % of the defendants have previously been uncondemned, 4,54 % of the defendants are repeat for criminal acts different from those prosecuted and 1,82 are repeated for the same work.
