Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern said that after a video conference with the Australian cabinet on Tuesday. The meeting discussed the possibility of creating a safe zone between Australia and New Zealand to allow free movement of citizens without quarantine. But visitors from other countries will not enter the country in the near future, Ardern explained.
We're discussing the possibility of creating a safe travel zone between us and Australia so that citizens are not subject to quarantine. As for the rest of the world, we will not open the borders for a long time”, Yacinda Ardern said.
Both Australia and New Zealand have closed doors to nearly all foreigners as part of the rebuttal for the prevention of pandemic. Tourism is one of the largest New Zealand industries, employing 10 per cent of the country's workforce, contributing nearly 6 per cent of gross domestic production.
Most visitors are from Australia, China, the US and Great Britain. On Tuesday, New Zealand reported no new case for the second consecutive day. Appreciated as one of the most successful responses to pandemic, there are only 1500 cases and 20 deaths. Australia, with a population of 25 million, five times as many as New Zealand, has nearly 7 thousand infected and 96 victims. This country has also successfully established infection, and many territories have eased restrictions.
