President Donald Trump says he considers religious objects to be the <x0 potential” centre and has called on governors to allow their reopening this weekend.
The communities of trust throughout the United States are reacting to this appeal. American Voice correspondent Patsy Widakuswara reports:
Religious objects in the United States have generally closed doors and are providing virtual services during the pandemic. The National Council of Churches is warning that early opening can have deadly consequences.
“Priests, leaders of the clergy, all are extremely concerned about opening their homes of faith at this moment, when so many things are not known”, says Revendi Steve Martin of the National Council of Churches.
On Friday, President Trump called on governors to reopen religious objects immediately, naming them <x0-virtical” during the pandemic. He warned that he would supersell those governors who continue to keep their homes of faith closed.
Some governors consider shops selling alcohol, or clinics performing abortions as essential objects, but have ruled out churches and mosques. It's not fair, the president said.
It is not clear whether Mr. Trump has the legal authority to dictate to the governors on this matter. He said he has asked the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to provide guidelines for the disinfectation and modification of services in religious communities.
The announcement was praised by First Liberty, an organization that protects religious freedom.
“Believers in America, had long expected such a thing to lead in this direction, to say that the First Amendment did not die”, says Jeremy Two, special adviser to the organisation..
But the National Council of Churches worries that President Trump's call would create divisions in the community.
Some people will ask the priests and church leaders to open up when, according to the most specialized advice, it is very early. When this pandemic started in the United States, it first opened up in the building where people pray and stick close to each other. And we have to pay close attention to these objects as we reopen”, says Rearnd Martin.
The announcement is unlikely to change plans for Muslim Americans who this weekend after Ramadan celebrate Fiter Bajrami.
Vice President Trump, who barely said the word glass during the announcement, the proposor of the ban on Muslims, does not decide for the religious activities of the Muslim community in the United States, says Robert McCaw, director of the Council's government relations on American-Islamic Relations.
Mr. Trump has expressed support for citizens protesting orders to stay home. Polls suggest that the most inclined to return to religious services are the Evangelistic Christians.
You can go to an abortion, but not to church. It's not fair”, says Darcy Atkins from Michigan.
Most evangelists supported Mr. Trump in 2016, and the president certainly hopes to have their support back in the November elections.
