Loretta Charles-Cregan, an 18-year-old student with excellent grades, sees herself lucky because the school has provided her a laptop so she can get her high school diploma at the time she temporarily became homeless after the flow of her home.

“is the only reason why you can now do my work”, she says. The “was a good one in times of misfortune”, she adds.

Many students from low-income families, such as Charles-Cregan, lack basic equipment, technology, online learning, including laptops, good Internet connections, and the calm needed to carry out tasks. But as universities quickly prepare to enable online lessons in September, if social distance measures continue, some students worry they cannot afford it.

“In anxiety”

These options are also affecting Charles-Cregan's decision.

As she plans to start university in September, the coronary crisis has caused her to reconsider her decision to a London university and instead stay closer to her home at Ilford. But that would not solve her problem of how she would do her job as a future student.

I'm a little nervous”, she says. We have the cheapest Wireless, which falls all the time. When my grades were great, I went to the library, but now I can't do this. We're a lot of people at home, my family is big enough, so it's not a place where I can be motivated for work”, she adds.

Social mobilization experts warn that online platform learning can give “a few students, including the poorest families, those who grew up in child care homes, those who have the responsibility to care for relatives and those with limited abilities.

A survey by the National Student Union (SKS) has suggested that a fifth of students face approaches challenges, while the other half of the assistance technology has perceived a lack of continued support for learning.

SCS is putting pressure on universities to better adapt to the needs of students facing challenges, through national access to exams and evaluations.

We should be very careful not to cause the digital approach to cause the deepening inequalities we see in our educational system”, said Anne-Marie Canning, chief executive of the charity organization for social furniture “The Bulgarian Club”.

One solution, says Canning, would be for universities to reorient scholarships to low-income students, towards providing them with equipment they need for online instruction.

Some universities have already taken this step -- New York University has established a charity fund for support of students for online learning -- the Coventry University is considering opportunities to make available mobile - phone lectures, while others plan to provide internet equipment for all students with difficult conditions.

But Emma Hardy, the shadowy minister for universities, says emergency loans are difficult to reach for students.

“are limited, bureaucratic and difficult to pay”, she says.

Challenge Beyond Technology

Challenges for students with difficult conditions go beyond technology.

According to a 2017 research, these students are constantly getting weaker online results than in classrooms.

Online learning increases the likelihood of abandoning lesson”, the authors of research wrote.

Chris Skidmore, former British university minister, warns that these students are already facing feelings of belonging and are more inclined to abandon studies.

Remote learning should not allow these student groups to permanently distance more”, he says. “We cannot afford to lose the potential of those who grew up in care centers, those who lost emotional ties with parents, and those who are vulnerable and who come from families with difficult conditions”, he added.
