A few days before World Press Freedom Day on Sunday (May 3rd), this nongovernmental organisation warns that many journalists are risking themselves by working to cover the COVID-19 crisis, some even being infected.
In a press release, the Geneva-based NGO, the militant protection of journalists, said that since March 1st, it had identified the death of the Coronavirus of 55 journalists in 23 countries.
She also explained that the professional cause of some of these deaths is not always determined.
“Gasers are at considerable risk in this crisis, because they must continue to inform, going to hospitals, interviewing doctors, nurses, politicians, specialists, scientists, patients”, the PEC said.
“In different countries did not implement necessary safeguard clauses, distance, wearing masks, hygienic measures, quarantine, especially at the beginning of the” epidemic, it continued.
According to its estimates, Ecuador results in the most affected country, with at least nine journalists dead because of the virus, followed by the US by eight, Brazil by four, then Great Britain and Spain by three.
