The United Kingdom Foreign Office (FCO) is currently advising against travel, for an indefinite period.
However, European countries have begun to ease deadlock measures and border restrictions in preparation for the return of domestic and international tourists.
Travel restrictions and security measures are constantly changing.
Here's what we know so far about reopening borders across Europe
Austria
Cross-border travel will be allowed mainly with neighbouring countries. The borders will open with Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Republic of Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary on 15 June. Travel train services between Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic have been suspended. Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg airports are operational, but with limited services until May 31st at first. Bars and restaurants are open, while hotels will open on May 29th. The mask is mandatory in shops and public transportation, and there will be no major events until June.
Belgium
The international journey will likely be open by June 15th. Public transportation is working, where the mask is mandatory. Museums open on May 18th, while some tourist attractions, cafes, restaurants will begin reopening from June 8th onward. Currently, all travelers to Belgium must be isolated for 14 days.
Bulgaria
Several direct flights are under way between London and Sofia, for substantial travel. Some hotels, markets, restaurants, bars, national parks are also open. However, no date has been announced for reopening borders on non-substantial travel.
Croatia
Several border crossings on main roads are open to limited traffic. No date has been announced to reopen borders for other tourists. Several international and local flights operating. Parks, shops, museums, hotels and restaurants in the wild are open, and some public transportation is working.
Cyprus
Airports and maritime ports will begin “resilination of operations in phases” between June 9th and July 13th initially, along with hotels, open cinemas, theatres and shopping centres. Beaches and museums are likely to reopen on June 1st, while areas for nature games, parks, historical sites and archaeological sites are set to reopen on May 21st.
Czech Republic
Borders with Austria and Germany will open until 15 June. No date has been announced for the reopening of borders on non-substantial travel by United Kingdom citizens. Prague Airport is open, with limited indirect flights to the United Kingdom only for substantial travel.
Denmark
The Danish government has said it will decide on border control and travel councils by 1 June. Copenhagen and Billund Airports are open, with indirect flights to the United Kingdom. Shops, parks and several hotels are open, and public transportation is working. Restaurants and bars will open on May 18th, sports venues, theatres and cinemas will reopen after June 8th, when events or events involving 10 or more people will be allowed.
Finland
No date for reopening borders has yet been announced. Shops are open, but bars, restaurants and cultural institutions will not reopen until June 1st, while hotels and ski resorts remain closed.
France
Restaurants and bars will likely reopen from June 2nd, while some parks, large museums and beaches will remain closed until June 1st. Travelers will have to issue a health certificate, claiming they have no Corleone in order to enter the country by July, or they will have to choose an alternative to the 14-day isolation.
Germany
German borders will not be reopened yet, but there are flights allowed only for substantial flights. Some stores have been reopened, while hotels will open on May 25th. Big events are likely to be possible after August.
Greece
Borders will open for international tourists by 1 July. Several international indirect flights are functioning, and direct flights to the United Kingdom will resume on June 1st. Currently, all incoming travelers must be isolated for 14 days after their arrival. During June, cafes, centres, restaurants, hotels, cinemas, amusement parks and other sports venues will begin to open gradually.
Italy
Borders are set to reopen for tourists on 3 June. Parks are open; bars, restaurants, museums and non-substantial stores reopened on Monday. Hotels will probably open by June, however, depending on the bookings.
The Netherlands
Borders are open to tourists from Schengen countries. Some flights are operating with the United Kingdom, but a full health statement is needed. Hotels and some stores are open. Bars and restaurants in nature, museums, cinemas and music sites are set to open on June 1st.
Norway
The date for reopening borders has not yet been announced. Some hotels, restaurants and shops are open. Events with a meeting of up to 50 are allowed.
Spain
Dates have not yet been announced to reopen borders, but Spain plans to end the deadlock next month. The country will reopen in phases. There are very limited flights only for substantial travel. Travelers arriving in the country must be isolated for 14 days. Many hotels are open, and in less affected regions, some bars in nature and restaurants are allowed to open but not fully functional.
Sweden
Borders are open to EU countries. Limited flights are also functioning between Stockholm and London. While Sweden never entered full closures, shops, hotels, restaurants, bars and some museums are open.
Switzerland
Border crossings to and from France, Germany and Austria are set to reopen by June 15th. Shops, hotels, restaurants and markets are open. Masks are recommended in public spaces. Theatres, cinemas, museums, ski resorts, nature sports of up to five people, mountain services and other leisure activities are likely to resume from June 8th.
Turkey
Still no reports of reopening borders. Internal and international flights remain suspended. Restaurants and hotels are set to reopen on May 27th. Face mask is mandatory in public spaces.
