An article published in Emering Infectious Diseases by the U.S. Federal Health Agency Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says that the Coronavirus in a Chinese restaurant has spread from one person to nine others thanks to the air conditioning system, broadcast the Daily Mail.
The incident occurred at a restaurant in the Chinese town of Guangzhou in January, where a family from Wuhan, the explosion site of COVID-19, arrived.
Scientists say one member of the family was infected, but there were no symptoms, and after just two weeks, nine people from the restaurant contracted Covid-19. Among them were family members from Wuhan and two other groups who had sat on nearby tables.
The table where the infected people were seated had a three - foot [1 m] distance from the table where the family had been sitting from Wuhan, and scientists add that the restaurant has no windows and that the infection is likely spread by the spray.
But as man - made sprays remain in the air for a short time and travel a relatively short distance, scientists have concluded that the air - conditioning system has spread the virus into the restaurant.
To prevent the spread of the virus in restaurants, we recommend strengthening temperature monitoring systems, increasing distance between tables and improving ventilation”, the article says.
This article comes at a time when there is no consensus about when restaurants and cafes can be reopened.
Infectious Diseases Professor at the Vanderbilt University Clinical Centre William Schaffner said the study could serve as a look for changes in the existing rules in restaurants.
We'll reopen. But this has to be done gradually in stages. One of these involves limited functioning of restaurants and filling it with only half capacity,” said Schaffner.
