Medical personnel around the world have been put in front of the first battle against the Coronavirus, often paying a high price. One of them is Kosovo-born Syzana Gjokaj, now the nurse team manager at the Presbyerian Hospital emergency department in New York.

During the battle with the choreographer at work, Syzanne was diagnosed with COVID-19. The Voice of America spoke to Syzana and her daughter, Sarah, who has decided to help in her manner her mother's colleagues who continue the battle against the coronary.

For a number of days, Tsonaj's Sizanne is in quarantine, but more than symptoms are at this time disturbed by the fact that she is not near patients.

I feel very proud to offer humanity what I offer, at the same time feeling guilty that I am not there on the battlefield with my colleagues. I have so many emotions that I can't explain, nor can I filter in myself, as my entire team faces, doing its best for patients”.

Syzanne was diagnosed with COVID-19 in early April and first suffered more severe symptoms.

High temperature, coughing, breathing. I got the result, now I feel better. Temperature times I don't. It's an unpredictable disease. I could say I was one of the luckiest people because I haven't had the symptoms like other people have, of course the ones I've seen in an emergency that makes you freak out. I've felt a lot of fatigue”

The Gjonaj Syzana works at one of the hottest hot spots in COVID-19 worldwide. New York is the epidemic anchor in the United States:

This reminds me of the war in Kosovo. It is true that our hospital has implemented various strategies to cope with this pandemic, and it has created a new ward for the care of patients with COVID. But the emergency is always the flow of patients: those who have it and those who think they have it. The entire hospital, the whole system is overloaded. Doctors and all medical personnel are physically crushed, emotionally devastated. They often cry, comfort each other. They work extremely hard without having lunch, without going to the bathroom, without drinking water. I've seen a lot of people die, I've seen nurses give their family their cell phone to say goodbye. It's very difficult”, she said in this conversation about the Voice of America.

Commenting on her diagnosis, Syzanne asserts that she must have been infected in the hospital.

I certainly think that while working. My name was on about 50 patients who dated COVID. I think nobody's ever been prepared for the situation. My hospital, too. Although I can say that we had equipment even though the entire management said that N95 masks should only be used for a change that caused the infection of many nurses and doctors. A smaller negligence causes you to become infected”, Syzanne says.

It is a situation that has endangered medical personnel worldwide. Sarah, a 10-year-old, Syzanne's daughter, decided to help with what she could with the lack of masks.

I heard on the news, and I heard Mom talking to Dad that nurses and doctors didn't have enough masks. I decided to open an account recently to raise funds”, Sarah relates.

And we have done with Sarah 50 masks, which the sisters and nurses, the medical staff have seen as a very good thing, and then they called Sarah on the phone, saying, "I'll do the errand, make me flowers." She took it very seriously”, Syzanne relates.

Syzanne has a message for anyone who thinks that he is immune to this disease.

Although some young people think they're not affected, COVID doesn't know age, doesn't know faith or color. I don't have words to describe what I saw in the emergency room. I wouldn't have wanted to see anyone like that. The most difficult situation is to see someone out of air, praying I'm dying; they don't allow family. Imagine someone, whether young or old, dying alone, is the most frightening thing that could happen to someone. So you don't want to be that man... Here comes that book: stay home to prevent all that”.

Sarah's 10-year-old is forced to remain isolated from her mother to not get infected. They communicate with “FaceTime” via cell phone. Sarah can't wait to finish her quarantine period.

I'll hold him tight. Maybe I'll give him another gift.
