William Garrison had a chance to be released early this year, but he decided to serve his full sentence so that he would be free of oversight after his release.
Garrison was 60 years old, and had been in prison since he was 16 years old, according to Wayne County Attorney.
He was serving his first - rate murder sentence during an armed robbery in 1976.
Garrison died 24 days before he was released from prison after he was affected by COVID-19.
