At the beginning of the pandemic, prices of basic products had risen strangely. The panic in humans had largely made flour and disinfectant expensive. This had forced the Kosovo Competition Authority to launch a major monitoring through all points of sale and production.
Only one company dealing with the production of disinfectant alcohol can be deeply investigated by the Kosovar Competition Authority, of which there is doubt that it has raised prices out of normal.
The authority led by Valon Prestreshi says that on this issue they are considering the possibility of the investigation.
Valon Prestreshi, head of the Kosovo Competition Authority, told RTK that “for basic products in general our calls, even businesses have respected, in the institution, we are concerned and we have found a huge disrepression in, disinfectors or acooli 70 percent.
” We have talked to the owners, failed to testify why they have increased prices and there is no reason to sell acooli of 1.20 euro cents, after the pandemic of the market 7 euro”. It's the powerful button, it's abused by its dominant position, we've mounted it and we're monitoring it yet, it's Gentifpharm company, and we're considering opening the investigation. This company is also producer and importer”, he said.
Honey, oil, sugar, salt and all other food products have remained under constant monitoring of the Kosovo Competition Authority, since the COVID 19 pandemic has begun in Kosovo.
There's been an increase in price, but if you raise it to a percentage it's not alarming, it's not a problem, but we've had 200 percent price increases”, he said.
The authority has also investigated a Kosovo Government decision that creates monopolies.
Prestreshi says they have declared this decision illegal.
Valon Prestreshi, chairman of the Kosovo Competition Authority, said the government's decision is that all services should be taken by the telecom.
We have competitors in the market, with this logic we should leave one company, we have reaction that is contrary to free market economy. And we've made a decision and this decision has to be revised. ...we've already got no answers from”, he said.
Prestreshi warns a serious decision in the oilmen's case, which he says has strong evidence that they have made deals in the price-building of investigations made in 2018.
The Kosovo Competition Authority is the public institution, independent primarily dealing with the protection of competition in the country and fighting monopolies.
