The hospital is so full of patients that staff has no choice but to place four in one room, although it is common to have more than two. Because of lack of space, respiratory patients lie in hallways where they mix with people who have just arrived to seek help for some other reason.
The nurses said they saw two people die in the beds in the hallway. One patient died because no one just had time to reach out to see that he had no pulse.
Due to the unbearable situation, seven nurses refused to continue their work Saturday evening, until “reinforcements” were sent to them in the form of nurses from other hospitals.
Michigan is the third largest American state with the number of cases of coronary infection. Less than a month ago, there were 300 of them, and now there are more than 20,000. The problem for Sinai-Grace Hospital is the fact that it's close to some of the old people's homes that are increasingly infected and are coming for help.
We have no choice. We put patients in operating halls, corridors and all the space we can use. We don't know how much more we can do. People are running out of energy”, said hospital director Brian Taylor.
Four staff members who spoke anonymously about CNN said they heard sounds from respirators in the corridors, but simply could not visit all patients.
“Patients who are in very serious condition and who have visible symptoms of choreography cannot be reanimate, since they are in poor condition and the risk of infection is too high,” they said.
“The hospital looks like a war zone. Patients are everywhere, also equipment. There are chaos, doctors and nurses running around. It's horrible”, a hospital worker said.
