A team of Chinese scientists has isolated some antibodies they say are extremely effective “in blocking the ability of the new coronavrus to enter cells, which can eventually be useful in treating or preventing COVID-19.

Currently, there is no proven effective treatment for the disease, which is said to have originated in China and is spreading worldwide into a pandemic that has infected more than 900,000 people and killed about 45,000 others.

Zhang Linqi at Tsinghua University in Beijing said a drug made of antibodies like those his team has found can be used more effectively than current approaches, including what he called plasma treatment of people who have already healed.

After that, as it writes ReutersThe plasma contains antibodies but is limited by blood type.

In early January, Zhang's team and a group at Shenzhen's 3rd Hospital began analyzing antibodies from blood taken from blood patients restored with COVID-19, isolating 206 monoclonal antibodies, which he described as a strong “ ” capacity to connect to the virus's proteins.

They then conducted another test to see if they can actually prevent the virus from entering the cell, as he told Reuters in an interview.

Among the first 20 antibodies tested, four were able to block viral entry, and of them two were extremely good “” in this way, Zhang said.

The team has now focused on identifying the most powerful antibodies and possibly combining them to ease the risk of new coronavirus mutation.

If everything goes well, interested developers can massen them for testing, first in animals and finally in humans.

And in this direction, the group is said to have requested a partnership with a biotechnic firm Sino-S.B. S, Brii Biosciences, in a “effort, advance numerous candidates for profile andrapeutic intervention”, according to a Brii statement.

“The importance of antibodies has been proven in the medical world for decades”, said Zhang, under which “ato can be used to treat cancer, autoimune diseases and infectious diseases”.

Antibodys are not a vaccine, but they could potentially be given to people at risk with the intention of preventing them from contracting with COVID-19.

It normally takes about two years for a drug to be approved for use in patients, but Zhang, who posted online findings, hopes that antibodies will be tested on people in six months and that if they are discovered to be effective in testing, real use for treatment will last longer.

However, Reuters writes that other experts require caution.

“There are a number of steps that will now have to be followed before they can be used as a treatment for coronavous patients”, Hong Kong University infectious disease specialist Ben Cowling thinks, when the find was described by Reuters.

But it's really exciting to find these possible treatments, and then have a chance to try them. Because if we can find more candidates, then eventually we'll have better treatment”, Chowling was quoted as saying. /Telegraphy/
