UN Secretary - General Antonio Guterres said that the eleven countries in long conflicts have responded to this pandemic - time ceasefire organization's call. He promised to promote world calm in the coming weeks.
The United Nations is deeply concerned that the horrors of war in countries with fragile health systems will make the battle against the spread of the coronary almost impossible.
Speaking in New York, Guterres said his call, made on March 23rd, has been supported by a large number of member states, regional partners, civil society networks and various organisations.
A petition called for weapons reduction and increased voice of peace has been signed by more than 1 million people on the internet, writes the Guardian”,
However, the UN chief acknowledged that there is a difference between statements and actions in many states, though they have officially supported the call for peace.
He added that the sides of the conflicts in Yemen, Libya, Cameroon, Colombia, Syria and Ukraine have agreed to consider the call for ceasefire.
According to one estimate, 103 people have been killed in Syria during March, representing the lowest figure for a month during the entire civil war.
