In a Belgium-based research unit, scientists have announced the discovery of a unique antibody capable of neutralising the virus that causes COVID-19. The antidote comes from a source you wouldn't have imagined, from the lama.
Virologist Xavier Saelens has specific knowledge of the flu, and his main interest in research is to work towards a universal flu vaccine.
He believes the discovery of antibodies could be an important milestone in the fight against COVID-19:
It's important because our antibody can neutralise the COVID19 virus. The antibody is special, it comes from the lama. It's an unusual antibody. I think we found a good point in the virus which is fragile (and can be used) to contain it with the antibody of this animal”.
Although this marks an important step in the development of a potential antiviral anti - coronary drug, it is not the same as a vaccine.
Professor Saelens points out there are many ways to go:
Our discovery with this antibody is not a vaccine in the correct sense. You can take a vaccine essentially for healthy people. With an antibiotic, what we proposed may actually give the protection of immunity immediately to a patient or to a person who is potentially exposed”.
He says this medicine can take six months.
