Italy and its 60 million inhabitants have been placed under blockades, Prime Minister Giseppe Cita announced on Monday, as part of a series of comprehensive quarantine measures aimed at containing the explosion.
The northern Lombard region and the other 14 provinces have already been placed in blockades -- but this new decree will extend restrictions throughout the country, as the virus continues to spread throughout Italy and continental Europe.
The drastic measures include travel restrictions, bans on all public events, closing schools and public spaces such as cinemas, and suspension of religious services, including funerals or weddings.
To implement the ban on movement, military police, railway police and health workers are conducting controls in transport countries such as highways and train stations, CNN reports.
This impasse represents the harshest response to the coronary being applied outside China's territory towards the virus.
So far, Italy has 9,172 cases and 463 deaths.
