European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen voiced support for Greece's efforts to guard its borders on Tuesday, as thousands of migrants from Turkey are trying to enter the European Union's territory.
The situation on our border is not only a matter of management for Greece, but is Europe's responsibility as a whole”, she said, after visiting the region along with other EU leaders and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “Those who seem to be testing Europe's unity will be disappointed. We will hold our course and unity will prevail”, she said.
Turkey has said its borders are open for migrants who want to cross the European Union territory. A Turkish Government official has declared on February 27th that Turkey will not stop hundreds of thousands of migrants following air attacks on Idlib, where 33 Turkish soldiers were killed. Shortly after this announcement, the well-registered convoy headed towards Greek territory.
Greek police have used tear gas to disperse thousands of migrants who are aiming to cross into Greece. Over 3.5 million refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries took place in Turkey. Greece, which has been the main route for hundreds of thousands of migrants in 2015-2016, which wanted to reach European countries, has promised it would not allow a new influx of migrants. / REL
