According to Turkish media, the Boeing 737-800 plane split into three parts and was involved in fire.
Firefighters and ambulances were taken to the scene immediately after the accident.
The plane carried 171 passengers and six crew members, according to Transport Minister Cahit Turhan.
The airport, which serves many of Istanbul's Asian districts and the nearby cities of industrial centres such as Bursa, Kocaeli and Sarkarya, has been provisionally closed for air traffic.
