Early in January of this year, measurements were made in the middle layers of the 50-55km stratosphere over the surface of the Earth.

Measures on the Irish capital, Rekiavik, have shown the lowest temperature in the stratosphere in the last 40 years, up to -96 ° C. This information shows the poor state of the polar vortex in the stratosphere.

A few weeks later, a new record of low temperatures was reached, but this time in low stratosphere, between 18 and 20km high. In a study in Svalbard, an archipelag located in the Arctic Ocean, a temperature of -85 ° C measured in the lower layers of the stratosphere.

Since tests were conducted in cells outside the root of the polar vortex, the temperature above the North ollin in itself is certainly even lower. Tests indicate indicators for the amazing low temperature in the heart of the vortex for this time of the year.

What is the threat of the polar cloud?

According to the US Space Agency NASA measurements, the recorded temperature is the lowest in the last 40 years for this period in the northern hemisphere. This condition causes polar clouds to form in the stratosphere, which forms in its coldest parts, where temperatures drop below -85 °C. These clouds are less common than polar lights.

Despite their beauty, these clouds play a major role in the process of becoming impoverished. At the South Pole, they help create the infamous ozone hole. The reason is that these clouds stimulate the formation of chlorine and bromit, which are chemically highly active and contribute to accelerated ozone destruction.

The cold conditions supporting the formation of these stratosphere clouds continue until September, October over Antarctica, when the sun's rays a photochemical process contributing to the destruction of the ozone layer.

Uncertain Spring and Early Summer

In the case of the North Pole, the temperature is usually not cold enough to form these clouds. However, current indicators suggest a critical state of ozone. Sunbeams arrive at the North Pole in late February and early March, so that with the presence of polar clouds in the stratosphere, it can initiate the process of emptying the ozone.

The ozone hole on the North Pole is even smaller than that on the South Pole, but it certainly is insignificant to the Northern Hemisphere. The cause is a drastic cooling of the polar vortex, while the power of the wind inside has increased unusually.
