President Vldomir Putin's meeting with his Belarusian colleague, Aleksandar Lukashenko today, ended without agreement on resolving the energy dispute threatening their traditional relationship.
“We decided to continue this discussion, not one with one, but with those locked up in this process”, Lukashenko stressed after meeting in the Russian town of Soci”, highlighted in the statement by his cabinet.
In past weeks, Lukashenko accused Russia, his country's biggest ally, of paying too much oil and disrespecting the supply agreement with this fuel.
Russian state media reported that Energy Minister Alexander Novak's delegation failed to meet due to poor weather conditions.
During the meeting, Putin apologised for the absence of the Russian delegation.
Lukashenko arrived in Sochi the day before, after meeting with Belarusn energy officials, during which he stressed that Russia had failed to deliver the agreed amount of energy for last month.
“Moscow agreed to send two million tonnes of oil to Belarus and “in January, they sent only 500,000 tonnes, or a quarter of”, Lukashenko stressed.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeii visited several former Soviet republics last week and offered Belarus supplies of American fuel.
Pompeii is the highest-ranking American official to visit Belarus after decades.
