In his letter of congratulations, Merkel mentions Kurt, some of the difficulties his government will face, but has given support to the fight against corruption and organised crime.

Merkel, with particular emphasis, has also cited economic development, which she has said is one of the steps to strengthen Kosovo's European perspective.

Chancellor Merkel has reiterated that Germany will continue to support Kosovo, as she told Kurt that I would be happy to see you in Berlin soon.

Angela Merkel's full letter:

Dear Prime Minister,

I congratulate you on your choice.

You and your government have important and difficult tasks ahead of you. This includes establishing and expanding the rule of law, fighting corruption and organised crime, improving the economic situation and, especially, dialogue on normalisation with Serbia. These are the main steps to strengthen your country's European perspective. The Federal government will continue to support Kosovo this way.

I'd be happy to see you in Berlin soon.

I wish you luck and success for future tasks.

Yours sincerely

Angela Merkel
German Federal Republic Chancellor
