The US president's special emissary for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue Richard Green, says that despite the progress made, there is a long way to normalise relations between the two sides.
Speaking on an American radio show with journalist Hughes Hewitt about the announced renovation of the Belgrade-Pristina airline and railway traffic, Grenelli said American President Donald Trump's suggestion was to use the economy to raise political issues.
He estimated that some “small agreements” were reached during dialogue.
But I see the way forward because it's still a long way, trying to achieve normalisation. But we have some progress, “said Greenell.
The special envoy said Trump had asked him to question public opinion to see whether Belgrade and Pristina, as well as the leaders of both sides, were interested in some kind of agreement and that he then began talks.
What I learned in a conversation with both sides and the private sector, and my first meeting was with the business community on both sides, is that they just want economic normalisation”, said Grenelli.
Then, as he put it, the goal was to establish trade to a more normal level.
And what we realized is that air traffic, railway and road must normalize. We should have had the first flight from Pristina to Belgrade after 21 years. And so we started working on it and we were able to reach a deal, “said Greenell.
Speaking of the war in Kosovo, Grenelli said it was a hot issue the Clinton administration worked on and including NATO, adding that major conflicts and wars formed its view of the Balkans and Europe, but it was an honour to go to the Balkans to prove the reconciliation of both sides.
Grenelli stressed that the Trump administration, in its typical “style”, is trying to push both sides to comply without imposing an American “ide”.
Instead, he said, the Trump administration is trying to decide questions for Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and new Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti: “Do you have the political will to move forward, create jobs for young people, and really change the economy? ”
I think the answer is yes, even though the political situation is difficult. I constantly tell the parties that we will focus on the economy and that we will try to create jobs for young people in order to stay in the region. And let's put political issues aside until we create an impulse in the economy “, said Grenel I.
