Finland's new government has announced plans to give all parents the same parental leave in an effort to make fathers spend more time with their children.
The paid vacation will increase to 14 months combined, which would be 164 days per parent.
Neighboring Sweden has the most generous system in Europe in terms of parental rest for each parent after the child's birth.
Finland says that with these actions it wants to “compromise the welfare and gender equality”.
Health Minister Aino-Kaisa Pekonen told reporters that he had started a radical reform of family benefits, aimed at strengthening the parents' relationship from the start.
