A court in Egypt has sentenced Hisham al-Ashmawi, former Special Forces officer turned militant and 36 others after being convicted of terrorism charges.
Ashmawy had been captured in the Libyan town of Derna in 2018 and had surrendered to Egypt last May.
He has been convicted of several charges, including planning the 2014 attack, where 22 soldiers were killed near the Libya border and his involvement in the attempted murder of the former Egyptian Interior Minister, was said in a statement by Egypt's military.
Ashmawy led the Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group, considered the most active group of militants in Egypt, before declaring its allegiance to the militant Islamic State group in 2014.
The other 36 people who have been tried along with Ashmawi have also been convicted of terrorism.
Under the laws in Egypt, this decision has been referred to the country's Grand Mufti, as it decides on any capital punishment.
The new country confirmation hearing is scheduled on March 2nd, after Egypt's Mufti gives his opinion.
