The appointment of a special European envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue is not final, but an idea that European diplomacy chief Josep Borrell has discussed with officials in Pristina and Belgrade, Borrell's spokesman, Peter Stano, told reporters in Brussels.
In meetings with his conversationators, Borrell has cited the idea that a European official is tasked with the European agenda of the Western Balkan region. This has been one of many ideas that have been discussed with partners”, Stano said.
He said he does not want to comment on speculation in local media about the EU envoy, adding that it is “too early to talk about the status, rank or name of that person”.
Borrell, last week, visited Pristina and Belgrade.
After meeting with Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vucic, he has said the European Union should appoint a special representative who will commit more to relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia has ceased at the end of 2018, when Kosovo has taxed 100 percent of Serbia's and Bosnia and Herzegovina imports.
Serbia has conditioned the return to dialogue with the removal of the tax.
Last year, the US State Department and the White House have appointed their special envoys to the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
This process, which began in 2011, has been constantly mediated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, while having had US support.
