A great sandstorm has struck the Canary Islands in recent hours. Because of the situation created by the sand air traffic has been paralyzed and many flights have been canceled.
Satellite images show the huge cloud of dust stretching from the Sahara and empty into the Canary Islands, forcing hundreds of flights to be canceled and throwing travel plans into chaos for thousands of citizens.
All flights to the islands were canceled at noon today by Spanish airport operator AENA because of poor visibility, and departures were suspended too. About 230 flights were suspended last night, while at least 19 planes had to be avoided due to the storm.
Because of the deterioration of the situation, all airports to the Spanish resort islands” were closed, administrative authority Aena announced.
