Washington was advised to declare himself US ruler but refused

General George Washington was commander of the Continental Army 234 years ago, and on December 4th, 1783, he met with his senior officers at a New York Tavern to leave farewell.

The officers were excited because General Washington was not only the commander but also their hero.

Historians say that some of the officers advised him to declare himself ruler of the United States. They assured him that there would be soldiers ' support.

Washington dismissed the idea as wrong. And he added that he wanted nothing but to return to his plantations at Mount Vernon in Virginia.

Four years later, however, he again appeared, not as a powerful ruler, but as the first elected president of the United States.
