The agreement is very important for the reports of Great Britain and the EU, as a failure would force mutual tariffs to be set.
The British government said the “agreement is fantastic news for families and businesses in every part of the United Kingdom”.
We have once again taken control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters. This means that we will have full political and economic independence on January 1st, 2021<18x1>, the British Government said through a statement. The trade agreement reached by Britain and the European Union is “right and balanced”, European Commission President Ursula Van der Leenen said.
I also believe that this agreement is in the interest of the United Kingdom. It will lay firm grounds for a new beginning with a long - term friend. And that means that we can finally leave Brext behind us, and Europe is continuing to move forward”, she said.
Von der Leyen added that “all this debate has always been about sovereignty”.
We must ask what sovereignty means in the 21st century. It's about uniting our strength and talking with a voice in a world full of great powers. It's about attracting each other in times of crisis instead of trying to walk alone. The EU showed how this can work in practice”, she said.
Both sides have until 31 December to approve it in the respective parliaments.
That is as on this date, Britain completes the transition period following the official departure from the European bloc in January this year. European Council President Charles Michel said it is now the turn of the European Parliament and the European Council to analyze it before giving the green light.
Fair competition regulations and fishing rights had been the main obstacle to reaching a trade agreement during nine months of troubled talks.
The agreement avoids setting tariffs, quotas, and other trade barriers that would cost both sides billions in commerce and hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Britain's EU exit decision has come after 52 per cent of voters have voted for Britain's EU exit 48 per cent who have rejected it in the referendum held in 2016. /tch
