At least 102 people have been killed in the western region of Ethiopia, Benisasul-Gunmuz, in the recent ethnic massacre in the East African state.
Witnesses and officials said that at least 102 people were killed during an attack Wednesday morning in the area called Metekel, writes The Guardian.
This attack occurred just a day after the country's prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, visited the region and spoke of the need to establish justice for those responsible for the recent attacks.
Interethnic tensions pose a major challenge for the government, though the prime minister is trying to promote national unity in a state of over 80 different ethnic groups.
Bellay Wajera, a farmer in the town of Bulen, told Reuters he counted 82 lifeless bodies in a field near his home following Wednesday's morning attack. He and his family were awakened by gun shots. His wife and five children were killed while he was wounded. Four other children have managed to escape, but now they are gone.
A local doctor said he and his colleagues have treated 38 injured persons, mostly injured by firearms. He said patients have shown the attackers killed their relatives with knives, while several armed persons have set the houses on fire and shot at those who have tried to escape.
Ethiopia has recently faced tensions and conflicts in the northern region, Tigray, where regional leaders challenged the central government with holding elections.
