On Human Rights Day, Secretary General's Special Representative and Chief UNMIK, urges human rights to be at the centre of response and recovery to the COVID-19 pandemic
On the International Day for Human Rights, Secretary General's Special Representative and Chief UNMIK, Zahir Tanin, reiterates the UN's commitment to supporting Kosovo institutions and other parties with interest in their efforts to advance and protect the human rights of all communities in Kosovo, including within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this regard, Tanin highlights the major role of human rights in responding to the COVIID-19 pandemic and the recovery of it so that we can do better from the pandemic, which has affected the realisation of human rights in Kosovo and unprofessionally has affected communities and people in vulnerable situations.
Refocusing the calls by the UN Secretary General and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, he encourages Kosovo institutions and all relevant parties to establish human rights at the centre of all response and recovery efforts, and to consider the different needs that men, women, boys and girls have.
Pandemia has distributed existing inequalities and the need highlighted to pay more attention to communities and persons in vulnerable situations. It next invites the undertaking of targeted additional recovery measures to address the impact of pandemic in Kosovo, including the aspect of realisation of economic and social rights.
“Taking into account that the world is marking the International Human Rights Day during the pandemic, Kosovo has the unique opportunity to use human rights as a guide for management of pandemic and recovery from it, and to make sure that communities and persons in vulnerable situations are not left out of”, P said. SSP Tan.
