The future Washington administration should neutralise the influence of China and Russia in the Western Balkans, said Daniel Serwer, director of the Institute for Foreign Policy and Conflict Resolution at Johns Hopkins University, emphasising, in particular Serbia.
On the American Congress House Foreign Policy Committee, he estimated that Russian influence would not be nearly as obvious in Serbia if Serbian authorities did not allow it.
President Vuciq opened his media in Russia and caused damage to the Voice of America, which has been reduced to a minimum after decades of presence in Serbia. This should be one of the priorities for the new US administration,”, Cerer said.
When asked by the moderator how the US should return as an active and important political factor for achieving stability in the Western Balkans, especially in Serbia-Kosovo relations, Cerwer first praised Russia and China's influence at this moment is much greater, but that Russia, due to domestic political problems, will be noticeably more focused on itself in the next four years, Tanjug broadcasts.
He said US intelligence agencies should pay particular attention to relations between Russia and China and their joint activities, which could jeopardise the influence of the United States.
Corruption is eating Western Balkan societies. I believe in the role of the private sector, which can improve the lives of citizens, but the most important thing is that the United States is actively involved in resolving the issue between Serbia and Kosovo,” said Serwer.
Serwer recalled that Kosovo is not recognised by five EU member states and noted that the United States should co-operate with the EU as a whole, but that it should revive and strengthen co-operation in the Great Britain-German reality- The US, which is the basis of a balanced policy towards the Western Balkans.
This axis must be renovated, and this would be my advice for the new American administration,”, Daniel Cerwer concluded.
