Serbian analyst: Albanians love Merkel because they need Germany more than the US

German Chancellor Angela Merkel ousted Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, Madeleine Albright and other US officials who were considered the favourite leaders of Kosovo Albanians. Serbian political analyst Dragomir Andjelkovic views this as the need of Albanians most for Germany now. According to a study conducted by the Pristina Institute [...]
According to a study conducted by the Pristina Institute for Political Studies on the preferences of Kosovo citizens for world leaders, Merkel came in first, along with other candidates, with 66%. Right behind him is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with 14%, while Americans won only nine per cent of the vote.
“Albanians have always been pragmatic and have always tried to pursue their interests by relying on a force they think is dominant in the region. They understand Germany will have the key word in the Balkans when it comes to the West. Biden's US victory does not mean America's return to the Balkans, but giving the green light from Washington Berlin to be a factor that will try to impose what the West wants”, Andjelkovic Sputnik told.
He notes that the big point is whether the result of research is really a reflection of the Albanian public or of the Albanian elite, which he doubts could stand behind such a study.
The search has always been manipulated and does not necessarily mean that they are correct. It is more likely that this is the position of the Albanian political elite who realize they need Germany, so they are trying to create illusions in Berlin that Germany is too popular in Kosovo. Albanians may not be mature enough to realize that it is in their interest to show this kind of loyalty to Berlin and perhaps among the citizens of America themselves, Biden is even more popular, the Serbian analyst said.
Andjelkovic recalls that Beden consistently stressed co-operation with Berlin and the desire for Euro-Atlantic co-operation, so he can be expected to leave Berlin in office when it comes to Kosovo, as well as that he will be fully on Germany's side.
“Trump had a conflict with Berlin, and unlike it, Biden will not have it either in the EU's respect or in the sense of politics in the Balkans. Therefore, it is clear that the Germans will play a key role in dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina” concluded Andjelkovic.
