It is not clear whether there were injuries, but it was confirmed that material damage was caused and some vehicles were destroyed in the embassy parking lot, the AP conveys an official's statement on anonymous terms.
The US Embassy retaliated by activating the anti-missile defense system C-RAM, which was established this summer in order to back increasingly frequent efforts to crack down on the US diplomatic mission in the Iraqi capital.
The attack caused fear due to possible riots on the eve of the anniversary of General Qasim Sulejmani's murder, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which was liquidated on January 3rd of this year, not far from Baghdad Airport.
Fearing revenge before the first anniversary of Sulejman's murder, the United States ordered a reduction in the number of employees at the embassy in Baghdad.
The frequency of missile attacks against the United States following the killing of Suleiman caused concern of administration Donald Trump and charges against pro-Iranian armed groups.
Washington warned in September that it would close its embassy in Baghdad if the Iraqi government did not take decisive steps to prevent missile attacks and other attacks by pro-Iranian formations on American goals and interests in that country.
