Greece formalised the expansion of territorial waters in the Ionian Sea from 6 to 12 nautical miles. The presidential decree on the matter was adopted by the State Council after controlling legitimacy.
It says that Greece reserves the right to explore and exploit the various sources of this Exclusive Economic Zone, including the production of energy from water and air. The decree will be signed by the country's president, and after publishing in the government paper, it will be transformed into state law.
Greek media write that defining the Exclusive Economic Zone in the Ionian Sea paves the way for resolving disputes between Greece and Albania over the separation of the maritime border at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. According to Prototema, it was an agreement reached between Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.
