During the first 2 years of the war, the United States had maintained formal neutrality while supplying Britain, the Soviet Union and China with war materials through the loan-qira law signed on March 11, 1941.
During the war of over 16 million Americans served in the army, 290 thousand were killed in action, 670 thousand were injured, 130,201 were taken captive, of which 116,129 returned home after the war.
