The highway is the German visitor: Do you know her dark past?

For the Germans, their highways in which they drive BMW, Mercedes and Audi, well over 130 kilometers recommended per hour, are a symbol of freedom. With certain exceptions, such as the Isle of Man (a self - governing island of Great Britain, located in the heart of the British Islands), a nation [...]

With certain exceptions, such as the Isle of Man (a self - governing island of Great Britain, located in the heart of British islands), a country in love with cars is the only one who can afford such a practice.

In darker times, Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler worked intensively to create a network of many lanes, which in the postwar years contributed to the country's economic success. The predecessor of today's highway in Germany originated in the post - war republic of Weimar in 1932 and connected Cal and Bonn. The road still exists and is part of highway 555.

Some time later Hitler ordered Fritz Todd to build German roads. Todd was behind a job creation program that, according to Nazi propaganda, helped eliminate unemployment in Germany. Highway workers lived in labor camps near the construction site, but not voluntarily they would be recruited from the Rich éch work service and thus wiped out from the unemployment registry.

Because of the large number of necessary workers during the war, there were not enough people to build the highway, which led to a growing need for forced labor”, confirms Alice Etropolszky, a traffic expert in Berlin.

By 1942, only 3,800km of the planned 12,430km highway had been completed. After the war, most of the roads in West Germany were rebuilt and an expansion programme that began in the 1950s was drafted.

The Bundesautobahn today has up to 13,000 miles [13,000 km] of highway, making it one of the longest and densest road systems in the world. Most parts have two, three, or even four lanes in each direction, as well as an additional emergency lane.

The names of restaurants, cafes and clubs across Europe also bear the German name for the highway.

In addition to a romantic history of freedom, Germany would reduce much of CO2's high emissions by setting limits on the road, and the number of people leaving their lives on the streets because of high speeds would drop sharply.

Highway speed restrictions for traffic leaders appear “out of discussion”, but political initiatives for more responsible behaviour are still under way.

Such interventions in “the nation's” provoke the anger of both union leaders and angry drivers who experience emotionally the idea of bans.

A limit to highway speed of 120km per hour would amount to a fifth of Germany's delay on the 2020 target set in the transport sector, environmental experts say.
