The Witnesses said that people were screaming in panic, and some had been thrown into the air by the force of the blow when the car entered the marketplace.
“We have arrested a person and a vehicle has been seized”, police said, adding that a 51-year-old German suspect from the Trier city area was detained within minutes of the incident and was being questioned, police reported.
Prosecutor Peter Fritzen later said at a press conference that the suspect had drunk a considerable amount of alcohol, and authorities were not investigating with the assumption that the incident had any motive inspired by Islamic militantism.
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said: “seems to be referring to a mentally challenged suspect, but we should not render early judgment. ”
Authorities said a more thorough assessment of his mental health would be necessary to determine whether the person could be held accountable.
The suspect had spent the last few nights in the vehicle and did not seem to have a fixed address, Trier's deputy police chief Franz-Dayter Ankner said. He borrowed the vehicle, which was registered in the name of someone else.
Mayor Leibe said a nine-month-old child was among those who lost their lives.
Interior Minister of State Rhinoland-Palatente Roger Lewentz said that two women aged 25 and 73 and one man, 45, all from the city of Trier, lost their lives in the incident. A 52-year-old woman later lost her life. Some of the wounded are in critical condition.
