France's President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel informed the heads of other states of the situation in the Normandy Format talks during an EU summit in Brussels. They recommended extending the terms of sanctions due to the small progress that has been made, according to close diplomats with these talks.
The so-called Normandy Format is a diplomatic process in which Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France are participating, with which the solution to the conflict in parts of Ukraine between government forces and Moscow-backed separatists is aimed.
The Norman format has not held the official summit since December last year, while the summit was held in October 2016, writes Free Europe.
The sanctions for the first time were imposed in July 2014 after Russia strongly annexed the Crime Peninsula from Ukraine and had begun to offer military support to separatists in a conflict in which more than 13,000 people have been killed so far.
Since then, the term of sanctions has been extended annually for six months.
