The crew of astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell, William Anders became the first people to view Earth from above as an entire planet, and the first to look directly at the Dark Moon.
It took three days for the ship to reach the orbit of the moon. On Christmas Eve, astronauts carried out a television broadcast from the ship into orbit, reading the first 10 lines from the Book of Genesis for viewers on Earth.
The successful Apollo 8 mission opened the way for Apollo 11 mission to meet President John Kennedy's goal of lowering man on the moon before the end of 1960s.
Apollo 8 returned to Earth on December 27, 1968, when the capsule of the three astronauts crashed into the northern Pacific Ocean.
