The authors of the two bills said violations by YouTube and Facebook had demonstrated the need for this legislation, which is part of trying to boost Russia's sovereignty on the internet.
The first bill allows Russia to limit access or even completely block sites, following what lawmakers called complaints by state media that their accounts were being handled with prejudice by Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, reports The Guardian, Periscope.
Twitter had started to label some of the Russian media with the description <x0medium related to state”, along with that of many important people and senior government officials since August.
The authors of this bill said that YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram had failed to remove hundreds of pages with banned content under Russian laws.
Both bills are expected to become law, even though it still needs approval from the high dune chamber and the signing by President Vladimir Putin.
Google, Twitter and Facebook have not yet commented on this development. /Periscope
