Daniel Serwer: Kosovo needs new president, priority dialogue

Analyst and university professor in Washington, Daniel Serwer, has said dialogue on Kosovo is a priority as well as the election of a president should be made as soon as possible. “Whatever Pristina or Belgrade wants, they should be willing to provide an equivalent. “Whatever Pristina or Belgrade wants, they should be willing to provide an equivalent. And all that is agreed upon must be implemented in a verifiable way. It should also be clear that dialogue exists with one purpose: to enable mutual recognition and exchange of ambassadors. Nothing less is real normalisation”, says Serwer.
Serer believes Kosovo can replace former political elites who were transferred to The Hague Special Court's detention as charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Serwer said there are many people in Kosovo who can compensate for Hashim Thaci's absence, Kadri Veselin, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.
Of course there is. Kosovo has many people who can replace the accused, who rightly went to defend”, Serer said in an interview for the Serbian media in Kosovo, “Kosovo Online”.
He said further that he believes the current government in Kosovo will do everything not to go to the elections, because Cerwer predicts they would lose.
Kosovo needs a new president. If this cannot be done within the deadline in the current parliament, a new parliament will need, meaning elections. But I expect that the current ruling coalition will do everything to avoid it, because it can be lost. The expansion of the coalition can solve both problems”, he said.
